Nov. 10, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior guard Sheena Carpenter nailed her first career three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to give the JU women's basketball team a 56-54 win over Valdosta State, Thursday evening in an exhibition contest at Swisher Gymnasium.
"We got great opportunities to run our last second plays and three consecutive out of bounds plays in pressure situations," said JU assistant coach Andrea Williams. "We ended up getting the ball in our senior's hands to end the game and something good happened."
Down 54-53 with seven seconds remaining, junior forward Ashley Williams grabbed the rebound after a missed free throw by VSU's Carley Peterson. After receiving the hand off from Williams with seven seconds remaining, Carpenter drove the length of the court and pulled up from beyond the arc to the right of the key and drained a jumper as time expired.
Carpenter led the Dolphins with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, including a 2-of-3 effort from the line. Williams added 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while junior guard Nakina Alford rounded out the Dolphins in double-figures with 10 points. Freshman forward Kelly Ford a game-high nine rebounds and four blocks.
