Nov. 19, 2005
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Senior guard Sheena Carpenter finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, but it was not enough as JU fell to Norfolk State, 79-68, Saturday afternoon in the final round of the Carolina First Classic at the Justice Center.
In the first round of the tournament, JU dropped a 65-47 contest to host UNC Asheville despite a 12 point, 13 rebound effort from sophomore forward Ashley Williams.
JU (0-2) shot 63.6 (14-22) from the floor in the second half but could not overcome Norfolk State (2-0), who shot 50 percent (13-26) in the first half and 59.3 percent (16-27) in the second.
"I'm encouraged by the fact that we are getting better as we keep playing," said JU head coach Jill Dunn. "We had some after effects from last night's game in the first half, but we started clicking when we came out in the second half."
Carpenter broke double-digits for the first time this season after shooting 8-of-15 in the contest. Junior guard Nakina Alford finished with 14 points, including a 4-of-6 mark from beyond the arc. Sophomore forward Ashley Williams finished with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor.
Five Norfolk State players finished with double-figure points, including Toia Johnson (23) and Ashley Bowman (22).
JU will next face USF on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
