Women's Basketball falls to UNC Asheville, 65-47

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore forward Ashley Williams led the Dolphins with 12 points and 13 rebounds and junior guard Nakina Alford had 11 points and five rebounds, but cold shooting in the second half gave UNC Asheville a 65-47 win over the Dolphins, Friday evening in the 2005-06 season opener at the Justice Center.

"Obviously we're disappointed in the way we came out in the second half," said JU head coach Jill Dunn. "We were competitive and gave ourselves a chance to win in the first half, but things just didn't go our way in the second frame."

Asheville (1-0)used a 16-3 run to start the second half to break open a 30-26 game at the half. The Dolphins(0-1) missed their first 19 shots of the half as JU managed just three free throws in the first 11 and a half minutes of the second period.

Katie Baldwin led three UNC Asheville Bulldogs in double figures with 13 points and Stacy Shepard grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds to lead Asheville. Krystal Hood scored 11 points, Ashton Barton chipped in 10 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Asheville jumped out to a 27-10 lead in the first half but JU responded with a 16-3 run to close out the half and go into the locker room down by just four points.

Cold shooting to start the second half allowed Asheville to build its lead to double figures at 38-28 at the 13:14 mark. JU shot 21 percent in the second half and committed 26 turnovers in the game. UNCA shot 47 percent in the second half and finished the night at 43 percent from the floor.

Both teams return to action tomorrow in the second round of the. Jacksonville plays Norfolk State, who was a 70-57 winner over Campbell, at 2 p.m. in the second round of the Carolina First Classic. UNC Asheville faces Campbell at 4 p.m.
