Women's Basketball falls to Lipscomb, 70-58, in sluggish contest

NASHVILLE - Sophomore forward Ashley Williams tallied her second consecutive double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, but the Dolphins could not overcome poor shooting from the field as the JU women's basketball team fell to Lipscomb, 70-58, Saturday afternoon at Allen Arena.
JU (4-13, 1-9) held a 16-23 turnover advantage but shot 25.8 percent (8-31) in the first half. Lipscomb (4-13, 3-7) was lead by Miriam McAlister's 13 points, 10 rebounds, four assits, two blocks and two steals.
Williams finished 8-of-12 from the floor to tally her seventh 20-point performance of the season. Senior guard Sheena Carpenter tallied 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while freshman forward Virginia Gregoire also added seven points, eight rebounds and a career-high four steals.
With JU trailing 34-25 at the half, both team went back and forth until the Lady Bisons extended their lead to 48-35 at the 11:58 mark with a 3-0 run. Lipscomb pushed the advantage to 19, 59-40, after a jumper by Miriam McAlister with 6:05 remaining. JU used an 11-5 run to make it 64-51 after a basket by Williams with 3:25 left. The Dolphins cut the deficit to 68-58 after a break away layup by Carpenter with 1:08 remaining, but JU could not break the 10-point barrier.
In the first half, JU trailed 8-4 early but a put back by freshman forward Kelly Ford evened the game, 8-8, at the 15:01 mark. Lipscomb answered with a 8-1 run to lead, 16-9, with 11:55 remaining. JU took its first lead of the contest, 18-17, after a free-throw by Williams at the 7:36 mark to cap a 9-1 run. The Lady Bisons answered with a 13-2 run to lead, 30-20, with 3:21 remaining in the half.
The Dolphins return to Swisher Gymnasium to host Campbell on Thursday at 7 p.m
