Ashley Williams Named A-Sun Women's Basketball Player of the Week

Feb. 6, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore forward Ashley Williams was named Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Dolphins to a pair of wins last week and the program's first three-game home winning streak since 2002-03. Williams becomes the first Dolphin to receive the A-Sun weekly honor since forward Yolisha Jackson on Feb. 22, 2002.

"Ashley has been very deserving of this award all season and I'm glad she is getting the recognition she deserves," said JU head coach Jill Dunn. "She has picked up her game on the offensive and defensive end of the floor and has emerged as an emotional leader. Her teammates are doing a good job of getting her the ball in one-on-one opportunities so she can score."

Against Campbell, Williams finished with a team-high 15 points and tied the program record with six blocked shots to lead the Dolphins to a 63-55 win over the Camels. She shot 6-of-15 from the field and also tallied three rebounds and two steals in 38 minutes.

Against Gardner-Webb, she continued her stellar play with a game-high 22 points, four rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots to lead the squad to a 65-53 win over the Bulldogs. With the contest tied at the half, Williams scored 14 points in the second frame to seal the win. She finished 7-of-10 from the floor and also a perfect 8-of-8 effort from the free-throw line.

For the week, Williams averaged 18.5 points, 4.0 blocks, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals, while also shooting 52 percent from the floor (13-25) and a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line. She has now scored 20 points or more on seven occasions this year and also leads the squad with five double-doubles.

In the A-Sun standings, Williams ranks fifth in scoring (17.1 ppg), second in blocked shots (2.42) and free-throw percentage (.875) and third in field-goal percentage (.531).

JU will be in search of its first three-game winning streak since 2000-01 when the Dolphins travel to East Tennessee State on Thursday at 4:45 p.m. EST.
