Late rally not enough for Women's Hoops in 66-59 loss to Belmont

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore forward Ashley Williams finished with 24 points and senior guard Sheena Carpenter added 18 points to fuel a late rally, but the JU women's basketball team fell to Belmont, 66-59, Saturday afternoon in the home finale at Swisher Gymnasium.

JU (9-16, 6-12) erased a 13-point deficit to lead 54-53 with 3:12 left, but Williams fouled out and the Bruins made 12-of-12 free throws down the stretch. Belmont (19-6, 15-3) was lead by Alysha Clark's 14 points, 17 rebounds and four assists.

Williams finished 11-of-15 from the floor with five rebounds and two blocks before fouling out with 57 seconds left in the contest. Carpenter, who played in her final home game as a Dolphin, went 7-of-18 from the field and 4-for-6 from the line to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Nakina Alford and freshman forward Virginia Gregoire each finished with eight points. Gregoire also added a team-high eight rebounds and five assists.

Leading 23-21 at the half, Belmont used a 5-0 run to lead 28-21 at the 19:15 mark. Both teams would trade baskets until the Bruins pushed the advantage up to a game-high 13 (50-37) with 8:05 remaining. JU answered with a 17-4 run to take a 54-53 lead after a free-throw by Williams with 3:12 left. The Bruins took the lead back on a pair of free-throws by Clark and then led 59-56 when Williams picked up her fifth foul. The Bruins sank eight more free throws to seal the win.

The Dolphins will next travel to Mercer on Thursday, March 2, at 7 p.m.
