Aug. 21, 2006
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville women's basketball team will have 14 home games, including two contests at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, and an 18-game Atlantic Sun Conference slate as the Dolphins released their schedule on Monday.
The Dolphins home schedule features five non-conference home games, with the home opener coming against South Carolina State on Nov. 17. JU's first game in the Downtown arena will be against Charleston Southern on Nov. 25.
Other highlights of the schedule include a trip to face ACC powerhouse, Georgia Tech, on Dec. 10 and a trip to the Big East up-and-comer, South Florida, on Dec. 20.
"We have established a very competitive schedule this year," said JU head coach Jill Dunn. "We play an ACC opponent for the first time in three years and that conference represented the national champion last season. We also travel to South Florida again, which comes out of a top five conference in women's basketball. The rest of our schedule is also very solid and will help prepare us for Atlantic Sun Conference play."
Other non-conference home games include South Carolina State (Nov. 17), UCF (Nov. 21), Niagara (Dec. 18) and Florida A&M (Dec. 30). The non-conference road schedule will feature trips to Charleston Southern (Nov. 13), Georgia Southern (Dec. 13) and Bethune-Cookman (Dec. 16).
JU opens A-Sun play on the road at conference powers Lipscomb (Nov. 30) and Belmont (Dec. 2). The Dolphins jump back into A-Sun play at home against Gardner-Webb (Jan. 2) and Campbell (Jan. 4). The Gardner-Webb contest will also be held at the Downtown arena.
The Dolphins will host archrival North Florida on Jan. 13 before facing the Lady Ospreys on the road on Feb. 10.
The schedule rounds out with four of the final six games at Swisher Gymnasium, beginning with East Tennessee State (Feb. 15), followed by Kennesaw State (Feb. 17), Belmont (March 1) and the regular-season finale against Lipscomb (March 3).
