Men's tennis splits two matches over the weekend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU men's tennis team split a pair of matches over the weekend, knocking off Hofstra 5-2 before dropping a 6-1 decision to Florida Atlantic.
The Dolphins (1-4) opened the weekend with their first victory of the season over Hofstra, winning the doubles points and four of the singles matches.
Against Florida Atlantic, JU got one win in singles play, losing two of the matches in three sets and one of the other matches going to a tiebreaker in a set.
"We are playing well and making significant improvement each match" said JU head coach Shane Wood. "We're making progress. We're not where we want to be, but we are making strides to getting positive results."
Jacksonville swept the three doubles matches against Hofstra to start the match. Jordi Ballester and Francisco Riveroll won the No. 1 match, 8-5. Victor Vaz and Alberto Lopez took an 8-1 victory in the No. 2 match while Vinny Craveiro and Marcos Oliveira won the No. 3 match, 8-4.
That momentum continued into singles play. Ballester won 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 match, with Vaz taking a 6-2, 6-4 win in the No. 2 match. Riveroll took a 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 3 match with Oliveira winning 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 match.
Craviero dropped a tough match in the No. 5 spot, 7-6, 6-3 and Lopez lost the No. 6 match, 6-4, 6-3.
JU's outing versus Florida Atlantic opened with the Owls sweeping all three doubles matches. The Owls took five of the six singles matches, but without some tense moments.
Ballester won the No. 1 match, rallying to win in three sets after losing the first set 6-0. He won the final two sets, 6-4, 6-4 to claim JU's only point.
The Dolphins lost two matches in three sets - Craveiro at No. 5, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 and Lopez in the No. 6 match, 6-7, 6-0, 7-6.
JU returns to the court on Feb. 29 as it opens Atlantic Sun Conference play against Belmont. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
