April 2, 2008
FT. MYERS, Fla. - The JU men's tennis team went 1-2, over the week, dropping home matches against No. 33 East Tennessee State on Friday and USC Upstate on Saturday, before rebounding to defeat Florida Gulf Coast, 4-3, in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Jordi Ballester returned after missing the first two games because of injury to win the No. 1 matchup over Florida Gulf Coast's Ricardo Hernandez in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
"We battled through some injuries and won a really good tennis match against Florida Gulf Coast," said JU head coach Shane Wood. "ETSU and Upstate are really good teams and we needed a win to get off the losing streak we had been on. The guys responded really well to the conditions. I challenged them and they responded to beat a team that was playing some good tennis. It was a good confidence builder for us."
The doubles point put the Dolphins over the top, with the No. 2 team of Victor Vaz and Alberto Lopez defeating Muller and Hernandez, 9-8, and the No. 3 team of Craveiro and Marco Oliveira defeated Danny Lee and Lima, 8- 6.
The Dolphins No. 1 team of Ballester and Francisco Riveroll dropped the match to Brenton Bacon and Andrew Kam, 9-8.
No. 2 Vaz dropped his singles' match to Bacon, 6-4, 6-2, while Oliveira fell to Kam by the same score in the No. 4 matchup. No. 5 Lopez fell to Lee, 6-2, 6-2.
The Dolphins dropped both matches to East Tennessee State and USC Upstate, 7-0. The No. 1 pairing of Riveroll and Vaz won their doubles match, 8-3.
The Dolphins will be back in action on Saturday against Mercer in Macon, Ga. at 1 p.m.
