Women's Golf Finishes Fifth at A-Sun Championship

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - JU sophomore Ashley Grier (Hagerstown, Md.) fired a final-round 76 to finish with a 229 (81-72-76) en route to a seventh-place finish at the Atlantic Sun Championship as the Dolphins fired a final-round 316 to place fifth with a 958 (322-320-316) at the 11-team event, which took place at the par-72, Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek, N.C. Grier edged out Florida Atlantic's Jessica Carafiello by one stroke. Host Campbell captured the team championship with an 890 (301-295-294) to earn the A-Sun's automatic bid to the 2004 NCAA Women's Golf Regionals in May.

Junior Pamela Shelley (Alachua, Fla.) shot a final-round 77 to place 18th with a 239 (82-80-77), while senior Karin Haggard (Gothenburg, Sweden) tied for 32nd with a 247 (83-84-80). Senior Winnie Dorminey (Jacksonville/Wolfson) placed 39th after shooting a 249 (79-87-83) and senior Ana Mateo (Madrid, Spain) shot a 254 (80-84-90) to place 43rd in her final collegiate event.

Georgia State finished second with a 916 (316-294-306), while Troy State fired a 952 (324-309-319) to finish third and edge Florida Atlantic (323-307-325=955) by three strokes. Georgia State's Lisbeth Meincke shot an even-par 216 (75-71-70) to edge Campbell's Josefina Usandizaga (75-70-72=217) by one stroke for individual medallist honors.
