July 12, 2004

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jim Taketa has been named head coach of the Dolphin men's and women's golf programs, JU Vice President of Student Life/Active Athletic Director Dr. John Balog announced today. Taketa, who was an assistant under former coach Mike Flemming in 2000-01, had recently served as JU's Ticket Manager for the past four years. In 2003, he coached the program in the Atlantic-Sun Conference Tournament after Flemming was forced to stay home due to illness. Flemming retired as head coach after four seasons with the Dolphins.

Taketa began his coaching career as an assistant golf coach at Utah State in 1979 before serving as the Aquatics Director at Cottonwood Heights in Salt Lake City. He returned to the coaching ranks as head coach for the women's swimming team at the University of the Pacific from 1988-98. During that span, he was named Big West Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1992, respectively. While at Pacific, he also served as a staff member at the Tiger Golf Camp in 1997.

Outside of coaching, Taketa began working with renowned Sports Psychologist Dr. Glen Albaugh on the mental preparation of swimmers and golfers. Albaugh currently coaches PGA Tour members Scott McCarron, Kirk Triplett and Jeff Brehaut. As a player, Taketa competed in several U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur Qualifying Tournaments from 1972-78.
