JU Drops Overtime Decision To South Florida
September 21, 1999
Jacksonville, Fla. - South Florida (6-3) got an overtime goal from junior Christina Gaudion in the game's 98th minute to defeat Jacksonville (3-4) by the score of 3-2 at the Ashely Sports Complex Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Bulls extended their winning streak to four games.
After an action-packed first half that saw both teams score two goals, the Bulls and Dolphins battled throughout the game's second session to force Jacksonville's fourth overtime match of the year. Jacksonville opened the scoring just :50 into the game, as junior Marit Foss turned a pass from junior Stine Kloster into her team-leading sixth goal of the year. Kloster and Dolphin sophomore Trine Riis Groven picked up assists on the goal.
USF struck back with the next two goals as Bull junior Siri Nordby scored at 18:32 and once again at 30:49 to give South Florida the 2-1 lead. South Florida's Aleja Long picked up the assist on Nordby's first goal, while the second went unassisted. The offensive onslaught continued less than seven minutes later as Jacksonville senior Sara Robertson scored her first goal of the season to even the game at 2-2. Kloster once again picked up the assist for the Dolphins.
With the score evened at two, both teams organized their defenses for a scoreless second half, setting up Gaudion's "golden-goal" at 97:52. On the game-winning goal, South Florida sophomore Tia Opliger took a pass from freshman Julie Lechner, then fed a through ball to Gaudion as she ran down the left side. Gaudion's speed took over from there as she beat the Jacksonville defense to the pass, tucking the ball past the keeper for the game-winner.
The Dolphins will return to action on Thursday, September 30th when they host Samford in a crucial Trans America Athletic Conference match at 4:00 P.M.
