Mike Johnson Named TAAC Coach of the Year

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University women's soccer coach Mike Johnson was named Trans America Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and junior forward Trine Riis Groven (Skien, Norway) was named TAAC Player-of-the-Year, as announced Wednesday by the league office.
Riis Groven also earned first-team All-TAAC honors along with freshman defender Hanni Wenzell (Camino, Wash.), junior defender Yvonna Rowinski (Los Angeles, Calif.), senior midfielder Marit Foss (Hamresanden, Norway) and senior forward Stine Kloster (Stavanger, Norway). Wenzell and defender Tara Greggains (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) earned TAAC All-Freshman team honors.
In his third season as head coach of the women's soccer team, Johnson has led the Dolphins to a 17-2-0 overall record, an unblemished 9-0-0 mark in conference play and the No. 1 seed in this weekend's TAAC Tournament. Under his guidance, the Dolphins have set records for wins in a season (17), consecutive wins (16) and shutouts in a season (10).
Riis Groven, a 2000 co-captain, is tied for the team and the TAAC lead in goals scored with 16, including five game-winners. She ranks 16th in the nation in points with 39 and is tied for 16th for goals scored. In TAAC play, Riis Groven ranks tied for first in goals per game, second in points per game and is tied for fifth in assists per game.
Kloster is tied for the team and TAAC lead in goals scored with 16 and is listed third in conference in points with 35. Foss leads the team, TAAC and nation in assists with 26. She tied an NCAA record with six assists in a match versus Alabama A&M (9/1), which earned her a spot on Soccer America's National Team of the Week. She ranks seventh in the nation in points with 42, and has also scored eight goals this season, including one game-winner.
The defense of Wenzell, Rowinski and Greggains helped limit opponents to only 17 goals this season and led JU to a school-record 10 shutouts. Wenzell has also scored six goals, including two game-winners.
The Dolphins return to action Friday, Nov. 3 when they travel to Boca Raton, Fla., for the 2000 TAAC Tournament. JU will face the winner of No. 4 Jacksonville State/No. 5 Georgia State at 4 p.m.
