BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Jacksonville University freshman Regan Rone (South Amboy, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal in the 66th minute as the third-seeded Dolphins defeated sixth-seeded Samford, 3-1, in the opening round of the 2002 Atlantic Sun Championship Thursday evening at the Eakes Athletic Complex. Freshman Ranveig Aas-Hanssen (Skien, Norway) led the Dolphins' offensive attack with a goal and an assist as JU had a 10-0 corner kick advantage over the Bulldogs in the match. JU improves to 14-3-2 overall as they now get set to play second-seeded Florida Atlantic (14-4, 10-1 A-Sun) tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. in the semifinals.

JU held a 1-0 lead at the half, but the Bulldogs scored early in the second half as Allison Provine scored off a cross from Skye Dregalla in the 52nd minute tying the game, 1-1. The Dolphins would have an answer as Rone scored an unassisted goal, her first of the season, in the 66th minute giving JU the 2-1 advantage. Sophomore Michaelene Cadiz (Lutz, Fla.) put the game out of reach scoring in the 90th minute with the assist coming from Aas-Hanssen.

Aas-Hanssen gave the Dolphins a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute scoring on a header from a corner kick by Atlantic Sun Player of the Year Vanessa Illanes (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.).

JU faces second-seeded Florida Atlantic, who handed the Dolphins their only conference loss, in the semifinals of the 2002 Atlantic Sun Championship tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
