Soccer's Vanessa Illanes Named First-Team NSCAA Regional All-American

Dec. 11, 2002

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University senior midfielder Vanessa Illanes (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) was named First-Team Regional All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, while sophomore defender Hanni Wenzel (Camano Island, Wash.) was named to the third-team. Illanes and Wenzel are the first Dolphins to be named NSCAA Regional All-America since the 2000 season, when Marit Foss and Trine Riis-Groven were named to the second and third teams, respectively. Illanes, the 2002 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, and Wenzel, a First-Team A-Sun All-Conference selection, led the Dolphins to the finals of the Atlantic Sun Championship for the fourth time in the last five years and a 15-4-2 overall mark, the second best record in school history.

Illanes, who is the first Dolphin to earn NSCAA First-Team All-Regional honors, led the Dolphins and tied for the league-lead with 13 assists and 37 points, while finishing second on the team with 12 goals. Her 37 points ranked third in the league and ranks as the fifth-best single season point total in school history. Illanes closed out her career as the Dolphins' all-time leader in games played with 81, second with 23 assists and fourth with 75 games started.

Wenzel, who returned from an injury after earning A-Sun First-Team All-Conference honors in 2000, started every game and played every minute of the Dolphins' 21 games this season. She anchored a Dolphin defense that finished fifth in the conference by allowing 1.23 goals per game and tied for fifth with six shutouts. She also scored one goal, the game-winner, in a 3-1 victory over Gardner-Webb.
