Feb. 6, 2003

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University senior midfielder Vanessa Illanes (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) was named First-Team All-Southeast Region by Soccer Buzz Thursday. Illanes, the 2002 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, led the Dolphins to the finals of the Atlantic Sun Championship for the fourth time in the last five years and a 15-4-2 overall mark, the second best record in school history. Illanes joins Florida's Danielle Murphy and Florida State's Cindy Schofield as the only members on the first team from the state of Florida.

Illanes, the second Dolphin in the last three years to earn A-Sun Player-of-the-Year honors, was named an NSCAA First-Team Regional All-American in December, the first player in JU history to earn first-team honors. Sophomore defender Hanni Wenzel (Camano Island, Wash.) was named to the third team, joining Illanes as the only Dolphins to earn NSCAA Regional recognition.

Illanes led the Dolphins and tied for the league-lead with 13 assists and 37 points, while finishing second on the team with 12 goals. Her 37 points ranked third in the league and ranks as the fifth-best single season point total in Dolphins' history. Illanes closed out her career as the Dolphins' all-time leader in games played (81), second in assists (23) and fourth in games started (75).
