Sept. 5, 2007

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville women's basketball team will have 13 home games, including four contests at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, and a 16-game Atlantic Sun Conference slate as the Dolphins unveiled their schedule on Wednesday.

The Dolphins home schedule features five non-conference home games, with the home opener coming against Georgia Southern on Nov. 9. JU's first game Downtown will be against Florida on Nov. 28, the first contest between the two programs.

Other highlights of the schedule include a trip to face ACC foe, Miami (Nov. 13) and a venture to the northeast against Buffalo (Dec. 18) and Niagara (Dec. 20). The Dolphins will also play in a Thanksgiving tournament at East Carolina which will also host UMass and Winthrop on Nov. 23-24.

"This year's schedule is extremely competitive," said JU head coach Jill Dunn. "We are playing tough games early so we can prepare our team for the conference schedule."

Other non-conference home games include Lehigh (Dec. 2) and Coastal Carolina (Dec. 8). The non-conference road schedule also features trips to UCF (Nov. 19), Florida A&M (Dec. 6) and South Carolina State (Dec. 29).

"Our goal is to be in the best position possible from our preseason schedule to guide us into conference play," said Dunn. "Playing against Florida and Miami will give us valuable experience because if we win or conference, we will play SEC or ACC caliber teams in the first round of the NCAA Tournament."

JU opens A-Sun play at home against conference newcomer Florida Gulf Coast (Jan. 5) in the Arena before ending the weekend against Stetson (Jan. 7).

The rest of the Dolphins' home schedule will feature two more contests in the Arena - Gardner-Webb (Feb. 2) and Kennesaw State (Feb. 23). Games against ETSU (Jan. 28), Campbell (Feb. 4), archrival North Florida (Feb. 16) and Mercer (Feb. 25) will be played in Swisher Gymnasium.

The Dolphins' conference road schedule will include trips to Mercer (Jan. 12), Kennesaw State (Jan. 14), UNF (Jan. 19), another conference newcomer USC Upstate (Jan. 25), Florida Gulf Coast (Feb. 28) and Stetson (March 1).

JU will open the 2007-08 campaign with an exhibition contest at Swisher Gymnasium against St. Leo on Nov. 2 at 5 p.m. The contest is the first of a scheduled doubleheader with the men's team, who will host Clark University. The Dolphins will complete the exhibition season by hosting Tampa on Nov. 4 at 2 p.m.
