Women's basketball opens exhibition season with 75-57 win over St. Leo

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore guard Courtney Jackson finished with a game-high 19 points while three other Dolphins finished with double figure points to lead the JU women's basketball team to a 75-57 win over St. Leo, Friday evening in exhibition action at Swisher Gymnasium.

JU shot .362 from the field and connected on 9-of-26 three point attempts while recording a game-high 15 steals.

St. Leo shot a game-high .447 from the floor and finished 23-of-32 from the free throw-line but were forced into 31 turnovers

"It was good for us to get out on the floor and compete against someone other than ourselves," said JU head coach Jill Dunn. "I liked some of the things that we did tonight and we have one more exhibition game to work out the kinks before we start the season against Georgia Southern."

Jackson finished 8-of-14 from the field, including a 3-of-9 effort from beyond the arc to go along with five rebounds. Senior forward Ashley Williams racked up 18 points on 4-of-7 shooting and a 9-of-9 effort from the charity stripe. Junior guard Virginia Gregoire finished with 13 points, six assists and five rebounds while junior guard Regina Omoite added 11 points, seven assists and five steals.

Dominique Daniels led the Lions with 15 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 6-of-8 from the floor. Nichole Tyler added 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor and the free-throw line to round out the Lions in double-digit points.

In the first half, JU lead by as many as 15 points (23-8) after a jumper by Gregoire but the Lions cut the deficit to four (31-27) on a layup by Tyler. The Dolphins finished the half on a 5-0 run with a jumper by Omoite and a three by Gregoire to take a 37-27 advantage at the half.

In the second frame, pushed the advantage to a game-high 24 points (59-35) after a three-pointer by Omoite but the Lions cut the deficit to 12 (63-51) after a pair of free throws by Monique Reynard but the Dolphins answered with an 11-4 run to seal the game.

The Dolphins will complete the exhibition season against Tampa on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium. The contest can be seen live on as part of ASun.TV.
