JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior forward Ashley Williams tallied 18 points while two other Dolphins finished in double figures to lead the JU women's basketball team to a 70-64 win over Tampa, Sunday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium in the final exhibition contest for the Dolphins.

JU enjoyed a comfortable 20 point lead in the first half after shooting .485 from the floor while holding the Spartans to only .250 shooting. In the second half, Tampa shot a blistering .625 to cut the deficit to five but the Dolphins made some key free throws down the stretch and took advantage of Spartan turnovers to secure the win.

"I liked our energy in the first half but we didn't have any tempo in the second," said JU head coach Jill Dunn. "We have to learn to keep our energy at a high level at all times. Now that we've had a few games under our belts, we can evaluate some things and work on them before we open with Georgia Southern."

Williams finished 8-of-13 from the floor while junior guard Virginia Gregoire added 17 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Courtney Jackson rounded out the Dolphin scoring with 15 points. Junior guard DaVina Hamilton finished with a game-high five steals and seven assists to ago with six points and six rebounds. Junior guard Regina Omoite chipped in with seven points, six assists and four rebounds.

Sheena Walton led Tampa with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 10-of-17 from the floor. Alex Kane chipped in with 16 points while shooting 10-of-12 from the charity stripe. DeShaydia Mackey rounded out the Spartan scoring with 14 points while leading the team with four steals.

In the first half, JU jumped out to a 19-8 lead after a three-pointer by Jackson at the 13:41 mark and then increased the margin to 28-13 after a free-throw by Omoite with 4:20 remaining in the half. The Dolphins kept the pressure on by making it a 41-19 advantage after a layup by Jackson at the 1:06 mark but Kane hit a jumper before the half to make it 41-21 at the break. JU dominated the paint by outscoring UT 22-4 while also holding an 8-0 advantage on second-chance points.

In the second frame, JU got out of the gate early by pushing the lead to a game-high 26 points (49-23) on a layup by Gregoire at the 17:21 mark but the Spartans began to slowly make their move from there. UT cut the margin to 19 (51-32) after a three-pointer by Hailee Sullivan and then used an 8-4 run to cut the lead to 55-42 after a layup by Walton with 9:11 remaining. Tampa got the deficit into single digits with 4:06 left after a pair of free throws by Kym Taylor made it 62-54.

After a turnover by the Dolphins, Mackey hit a three to make it 62-57 with 3:23 remaining. JU answered with a 3-0 run to put the lead back to 65-57 with 2:39 left but Walton's layup cut the lead to 65-59 with 2:04 remaining. Each team would trade points for the remainder of the game but a pair of Omoite free throws with 11 seconds left iced things for the Dolphins.

JU will open the 2007-08 regular season on Nov. 9 at Swisher Gymnasium against Georgia Southern at 7 p.m. The contest can be viewed live on www.judolphins.com as part of ASun.TV.
