Women's basketball signs two players to letters of intent

Nov. 30, 2007

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU women's basketball team announced the signing of a pair of guards, Jessica George of Celebration High School and Ashanti Williams of Suncoast Community High School, to National Letters of Intent as the Dolphins begin construction of their 2008 recruiting class.

George, a 5-foot-6 senior, has led the Orange Belt Conference in assists for three consecutive seasons and was named conference "Freshman of the Year". She also led the Storm to back-to-back conference titles as a freshman and sophomore and set a school record with six three-pointers in a game. In AAU play, she led the Orlando Comets to three consecutive state championships.

"Jessica is a very smart and fundamental point guard," said JU head coach Jill Dunn. "She does an excellent job of moving the ball up the court quickly and is a threat from the three-point line. She will bring us much needed depth at that position."

Williams, a 5-foot-6 senior, was named Palm Beach County All-Preseason after scoring over 1,000 points in three seasons. As a junior, she earned second team all-state and first team all-county accolades after leading the Chargers to their second consecutive county title with team high averages of 15.8 points, 4.8 assists and 3.2 steals per contest. In AAU play, she is a member of the Premier Jaguars, which earned a spot in the AAU national championship in each of the past two seasons.

"Ashanti will play the combo guard for us," Dunn said. "She shoots the ball extremely well from beyond the arc and has a nice pull up jumper. She also handles the ball well enough to play the point position."

JU will return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. as the Dolphins face Lehigh at Swisher Gymnasium. The contest can be seen live on as part of ASun.TV.
