Women's basketball gets back on track with 84-53 win over Gardner-Webb

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After having a trio of streaks broken earlier in the week, the Dolphins bounced back in fine fashion behind junior guard Virginia Gregoire's game-high 21 points as the JU women's basketball team Gardner-Webb, 84-53, Saturday afternoon at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.

JU (17-4, 7-1), which is now 5-0 at the downtown arena, scored a season-high 84 points on 47.1 percent shooting from the floor, including a blistering 56.8 percent (21-37) in the first half.

The Dolphins also scored 33 points off turnovers, forced a season-high 29 turnovers, won the rebounding battle (42-37) and held GWU (8-13, 4-4) to only 27.1 percent shooting (16-59) from the floor.

"Our loss to ETSU was a wakeup call and we needed to bounce back," said JU head coach Jill Dunn. "We showed good intensity, took care of the basketball and hit our open shots. Now we need to make sure we are consistent with this effort as we head into the final end of our schedule."

Gregoire, who has tallied three consecutive 20-point games for the first time in her career, connected on 9-of-15 shots from the floor while tallying six rebounds, three assists and committing no turnovers. Junior guard DaVina Hamilton finished with 17 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field to go along with seven assists and two steals.

Junior guard Regina Omoite racked up the second double-double of her career (12 points and a career-high tying 10 rebounds) while senior forward Ashley Williams chipped in with 12 points, five rebounds and three steals. Freshman guard Shunice Hardy also added a season-high seven points.

Laura Povilonyte led the Bulldogs with 12 points while Margaret Roundtree (10) and LaToya Carter (10) each rounded out the double figure scoring for GWU.

In the first half, JU jumped out to an early 10-3 lead on a jumper by Hamilton at the 17:03 mark and increased the lead to 28-17with another Hamilton jumper with 8:07 remaining. The Dolphins made it 43-26 on a layup by Gregoire with 1:57 left in the period and another jumper by Hamilton, this time with two seconds remaining, gave JU a 45-28 lead at the break.

In the second frame, the Bulldogs opened with an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 47-36 on a jumper by Monique Hudson at the 17:03 mark. GWU would get no closer as JU answered with an 11-2 run, capped by a three-point play by Hamilton.
