Aug. 20, 2003
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior midfielder Inge Heiremans (Tremelo, Belgium) scored a pair of goals as JU defeated the University of North Florida, 4-3, on Wednesday evening in exhibition play. Sophomore forward Ranveig Aas-Hanssen (Skien, Norway) and freshman forward Jenny Borschel (St. Petersburg, Fla.) added a goal each, while sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer O'Malley (Ormond Beach, Fla.) preserved the win with a great save as time expired.
The Dolphins took an early lead in the third minute when Aas-Hanssen drilled a ball past the keeper from 15 yards out. JU made it 2-0 when Heiremans took a pass from Erika Chapman (Bradenton, Fla.) in the penalty box and found the back of the net in the 14th minute. UNF got on the board in the 21st minute as Shauna Kruger converted on a penalty kick.
JU scored twice in the second period, with Borschel striking from the right side in the 51st minute. Heiremans scored her second goal of the night two minutes later from 10 yards out on a pass from freshman defender Ashley Reilly (Orlando, Fla.).
The Ospreys rallied in the third period as Courtney Fortson and Christine Brewer each found the back of the net. UNF nearly forced a tie as Brewer broke through the defense and attempted a shot with five seconds left in regulation, but O'Malley took the ball off her foot directly in front of the goal. Sarah Scalese (Brewster, Mass.), Stephanie Lounsberry (Columbia, S.C.), and O'Malley combined for seven saves in the victory.
The Dolphins host Appalachian State in their final exhibition match on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Ashley Sports Complex.
