Women's Soccer Battles Louisiana-Lafayette to Double Overtime 0-0 Tie
Aug. 29, 2004
BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Jacksonville University women's soccer team gained a 0-0 tie in double overtime against Louisiana-Lafayette on the final day of action in the FAU Kick-Off Classic. The Dolphins move to 0-1-1 after the first weekend of play.
While the scoreboard showed no goals, both teams had goals taken away for penalties. Freshman forward Jess Newport (Forked River, N.J.) had a goal called back for being offsides after knocking in the rebound off sophomore midfielder Hilary Bricken's (Ft. Myers, Fla.) shot that was deflected by goalkeeper Kristen Malen. The Ragin' Cajuns fired a shot in the last minute of double overtime that would have given them the win, but it was also called back due to an offsides.
JU outshot UL Lafayette, 11-7, while also taking more corner kicks than the Ragin' Cajuns 5-3. Sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Kmiotek (Tampa, Fla.) saved four shots for the second straight match, while Louisiana-Lafayette had six saves, all by Malen.
"We had a successful weekend, despite the record," head coach Chris Kouns said. "The team showed marked improvement in the second game. This gives us something to build on going into next weekend."
Two Dolphins, freshman defender Emilie Howland (Bradenton, Fla.) and freshman midfielder Marissa Bernard (West Hartford, Conn.) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Dolphins open their home schedule vs. USF Friday at 2 p.m. at the Ashley Sports Complex.
Goals: JU-none, ULL-none. Shots on Goal: JU-11, ULL-7. Corner Kicks: JU-5, ULL-3. Saves: JU-4 (Michelle Kmiotek 4), ULL-6 (Kristen Malen 6).
