JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker in double overtime, 2-1, against in-state rival USF at Ashley Sports Complex Thursday afternoon. Redshirt freshman forward Stephanie Elgie (London, Ontario) hit the game-tying goal in the 85th minute, but the Bulls' Erica Lewis dribbled a shot past JU sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Kmiotek (Tampa, Fla.) in the 105th minute to give USF the win.

Elgie's goal came off a throw-in by freshman defender Louisa Ward (Tampa, Fla.) that was flicked toward goal by freshman forward Jess Newport (Forked River, N.J.). Both Dolphins earned an assist on the play.

USF took the initial lead in the 75th minute when Megan Morton drove past the JU defense and beat Kmiotek for the score. JU nearly tied the game up in the 82nd minute when Newport beat USF goalie Breck Bankester, but defender Tara Escribano headed the ball just before it entered the goal.

The Bulls outshot JU, 21-16, with the teams tying with 10 shots on goal. The Dolphins took more corner kicks than USF by a 9-4 margin.

"Morgan Marinell did a great job today, along with the rest of our defenders," said head coach Chris Kouns. "They did a great job handling the pressure. Morgan's just been big for us so far this season.

"I am very proud of the character this team has shown thus far. While the results aren't what we've hoped for, the effort has been there. We know the results will come."

The Dolphins play next in the UCF Fall Invitational against Air Force at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10 in Orlando, Fla.
