NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman midfielder Marissa Bernard (West Hartford, Conn.) scored her first career goal, and redshirt freshman Stephanie Elgie (London, Ontario) added two goals as the Jacksonville University women's soccer team defeated Lipscomb, 3-0, in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both squads Thursday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex in Nashville, Tenn. The Dolphins climb to 2-5-1 on the season, while Lipscomb falls to 3-6.

The Dolphins got their first goal in the 33rd minute when Bernard intercepted the goal kick and dribbled to about 25 yards from goal, firing a shot past the Lady Bison's Adrienne Chalmers for her first collegiate goal.

JU added another score before the half, when freshman forward Jess Newport (Forked River, N.J.) beat the Lady Bison defenders and found Elgie on the back post, who scored the ball to put the Dolphins up 2-0 at the break. Elgie and Newport ran the same play again in the 62nd minute, with Elgie scoring her second goal of the night to give the Dolphins the final advantage, 3-0.

"This was a good team effort tonight from our team," said head coach Chris Kouns. "In flashes we showed what we've been working on this year. Everyone got to contribute tonight, which is a tremendous credit to our team.

"It's good to play well and get good results tonight."

The Dolphins outshot Lipscomb, 19-5, on the evening. Sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Kmiotek (Tampa, Fla.) made two saves en route to her third shutout of the season.

JU concludes their A-Sun opening weekend at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, when they play Belmont.
