Women's Soccer Loses 1-0 Decision to Mercer
Oct. 1, 2004
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Mercer's Britni Combs scored her first goal of the year to give the Bears (4-5, 1-1 Atlantic Sun) a 1-0 victory over the Jacksonville University women's soccer team (3-6-1, 2-1 Atlantic Sun) Friday afternoon at Ashley Sports Complex.
The Bears' goal in the 55th minute came off a corner kick served into the penalty box by Lindsey Wegrzyn, where Rachel Astorino flicked the ball to the back post where Combs put it away for the score.
The Dolphins saw an opportunity to tie slip past in the 62nd minute, when redshirt freshman Stephanie Elgie (London, Ontario) hit a shot that got over the goalkeeper's head but hit the crossbar and bounced away from the goal.
"Give Mercer all the credit today," said head coach Chris Kouns. "They came in wanting to prove something, and they did. They outfought and outplayed us today. Now we just hope we can bounce back against Georgia State."
JU outshot the Bears, 8-6, but Mercer took more corner kicks than the Dolphins, 6-4.
On Sunday, Oct. 3, the Dolphins host A-Sun rival Georgia State at 1 p.m. at Ashley Sports Complex in the first game of a soccer doubleheader on the campus of Jacksonville University. JU's men follow at 4 p.m., taking on UCF.
