Nov. 3, 2004
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshmen forwards Stephanie Elgie (London, Ontario) and Jess Newport (Forked River, N.J.) were named to the Atlantic Sun Conference All-Freshman Team, announced by the league office Wednesday. The duo, selected by the 11 conference coaches, is the fifth and sixth women's soccer players selected for the team and the second pair selected from JU since Tara Greggains and Hanni Wenzel were seleced in 2000.
Newport and Elgie tied for the team lead in goals, both scoring five on the season. Newport led the team with three assists while Elgie had two on the year. The pair's 10 goals accounted for 59 percent of the Dolphins' offensive output on the season.
The Dolphins finished the regular season with a 4-8-5 overall record and set a school record for ties in a season. JU qualified for their sixth Atlantic Sun Championship in seven years after compiling a 3-3-4 record in conference play, which included three ties to end the season.
The sixth-seeded Dolphins will face the third seed, Florida Atlantic, at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4 in the opening round of the A-Sun Championship, hosted by Campbell University.
