Women's soccer falls in exhibition action to Coastal Carolina, 2-1

Aug. 19, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Keri Zwikker scored a goal in the first half, but it wasn't enough as Coastal Carolina downed the Jacksonville University women's soccer team, 2-1, in an exhibition match on Saturday afternoon at the Ashley Sports Complex.

"We were very pleased with the play of Stephanie Kormanik and Emilie Howland this afternoon," said Kouns. It was also nice to see Keri find the net right away. Hope that goal was the first of many this year."

Zwikker, the 2005 Atlantic Sun "Freshman of the Year", gave the Dolphins a 1-0 lead in the first half by scoring on a corner kick from Howland.

"It was nice to see us score off a set piece," Kouns said. "That is one thing we focused on this past week and it's to the girls credit they performed it."

The Chanticleers tied the game less than two minutes later when Ashleigh Gunning scored on the left side on an assist by Amanda Gelsomino.

In the second half, Laura Weiler lofted a shot just over the reach of Dolphins' goalie Michelle Kmiotek to score the game-winning goal for the Chanticleers.

"The game was a very useful learning tool," said Kouns. "Coastal Carolina is a good team which came at us with great pace and strength. It was exactly what we needed to get a true reading of where we are at this time."

The Dolphins open the 2006 season on the road against Georgia in Athens, Ga. on Friday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m.
