Softball Signs 10 Players To National Letters Of Intent

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU softball team signed 10 players to National Letters of Intent, head coach Jeff Franquet announced on Friday. Among the signees is first baseman Kimberly Burns (Orange Park, Fla.), who at Arlington Country Day, hit .349 with three home runs and 28 RBI. The Dolphins are coming off their inaugural season of fast-pitch softball, finishing with a record of 23-33 (6-16 A-Sun).

JU also signed outfielder Mayte Diaz (Silver Springs, Fla.), a junior college transfer from Santa Fe (Fla.) Community College, who hit .396 in the fall 2002 season and led her team to a 15-3 record. Diaz, who attended Forest High School in Ocala, was a two-time FACA Player of the Year and four-time first-team all-area selection.

The Dolphins signed three players from Florida Community College of Jacksonville. Pitcher Stacey Bell (Jacksonville/Terry Parker) was an all-conference selection, while first baseman/catcher Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) and outfielder Jamie Ross (Shoreline, Wash.) were both named Mid-Florida Conference Scholar Athletes. Kacey Yourous (Radcliff, Ky.), another transfer, played at Louisville for one season, where she appeared in 24 games and scored five runs.

Also joining the Dolphins in 2004 will be shortstop Stephanie Beasley (Tallahassee, Fla.), pitcher/third baseman Katherine Buell (Alpharetta, Ga.), pitcher Stephanie Byrd (Erie, Colo.), and catcher/outfielder Brittany Woodsby (Orlando, Fla.). Beasley was named the 2A District Co-Player of the Year as a senior where she hit .412 and drove in 32 runs. Buell hurled eight shutouts and had an ERA of 0.76 as a senior, while batting .330. Byrd lettered for three years in softball and was the team's leading hitter as a junior, while Woodsby earned first-team all-district honors as a sophomore and junior.

The Dolphins open the 2004 regular season with a doubleheader at Savannah State on Feb. 4th at 1 p.m.
