Softball Signs Five Players For 2005 Season

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU softball team signed five players to National Letters of Intent for the 2005 season, head coach Jeff Franquet announced on Tuesday. Among the signees are former Arlington Country Day second baseman Stephanie Farabee (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) and shortstop/outfielder Lindsey Freitag (Bellingham, Wash.), both of whom are currently playing at Florida Community College of Jacksonville (FCCJ). Also signing with JU was Shannon Jensen (Callahan, Fla.) from Trinity Christian Academy as well as Jillian Mirante (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and Katherine Pestrak (Gainesville, Fla.).

Farabee, who attended Arlington Country Day High School, is entering her second season at FCCJ, where she helped lead the Stars to a 37-18 record and third-place finish in the state as a freshman. As a senior at Arlington Country Day, Farabee hit .506 to earn first-team all-state honors and led the Apaches to a runner-up finish in the state. As a junior, she hit .476 en route to a second-team all-state selection as ACD finished third in the state, while as a sophomore, she hit .452 and earned honorable mention all-state honors.

Freitag, a graduate of Lake Stevens High School in Washington, is also entering her second season at FCCJ. As a freshman, she hit .267 with 15 RBI to earn first-team all-conference honors at shortstop. Freitag lettered all four years in softball at Lake Stevens, where she led the Vikings to a third-place finish in the state as a senior, and hit .280 with 15 RBI to earn second-team all-conference honors as a shortstop.

Jensen, a senior at Trinity Christian Academy, has led the Conquerors to back-to-back district titles and was named team MVP as a junior. She was also named to the all-city team as a sophomore and junior. As a freshman, Jensen played at West Nassau High School where she earned team MVP and all-city team honors.

Mirante, a senior at Palm Beach Gardens High School, hit .440 and led the team in stolen bases as a junior to earn first-team all-conference honors. She was also named team MVP as a freshman and sophomore.

Pestrak is entering her second season at Santa Fe Community College, where she led the team to a 36-16-1 record as a freshman, and hit .332, while recording a 1.000 fielding percentage. She is a graduate of Bucholz High School where she set the career mark for hitting, with a .384 average. As a senior, she hit .420 as the Bobcats finished second in the state, while hitting a school-record .462 as well as setting the single-season mark at Bucholz for triples (4) as a junior.

The Dolphins are coming off their inaugural season of softball, finishing with a record of 23-33 (6-16 A-Sun) in 2003. JU opens the 2004 regular season with a doubleheader at Savannah State on Feb. 4th at 1 p.m.
