Softball Scores 49 runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Savannah State

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team scored 49 runs on 42 hits, while sophomore Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) fired her first no-hitter of the season as the Dolphins swept Savannah State, 25-0 and 24-0, in the season openers for both Wednesday afternoon at the Allen Paulsen Complex in Savannah. Dobson struck out 14-of-16 batters in game one and had a perfect game until walking a batter in the final inning en route to her third career no-hitter. Junior Stacey Bell (Jacksonville/Terry Parker) and freshman Katie Buell (Alpharetta, Ga.) combined to shut out the Tigers in game two, allowing two hits while striking out nine.

Junior left fielder Mayte Diaz (Silver Springs, Fla.) belted six hits and drove in five runs on the day, including here first career home run, while senior shortstop Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) had six hits and four RBI. Janine Palumbo (Clearwater, Fla.), Stephanie Beasley (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Kacey Yourous (Radcliff, Ky.) each added five hits, while sophomore Ashley Houston (Glen St. Mary, Fla.) and junior first baseman Kim Burns (Orange Park, Fla.) also blasted their first career home runs.

After taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game one, JU blew the game open with a 13-run second and cruised to the 25-0 victory. The nightcap was much of the same as the Dolphins scored 10 runs in the first and 14 runs in the final two innings for the 24-0 win. JU is now 6-0 against Savannah State all-time after sweeping all four games from the Tigers last season.

JU returns to action this weekend at the UCF/Triple Crown Classic in St. Augustine. The Dolphins play Boston College and Indiana on Friday before taking on Southern Illinois and McNeese State on Saturday. JU opens its home schedule against Webber International on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 4 p.m.
