Softball Falls To Southern Utah, 4-3, at UNLV Classic
March 13, 2004
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Senior shortstop Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and junior left fielder Mayte Diaz (Silver Springs, Fla.) had a pair of hits, including her second double of the day, but JU's seventh-inning comeback attempt fell short with a game-ending double play in a 4-3 loss to Southern Utah at the UNLV Classic in Las Vegas. The Dolphins, who have played 28 of their first 30 games away from home, will play Southern Utah (12-7) again Sunday in the final day of the tournament.
JU (9-21) had runners on first and second with no outs in the top if the seventh, but couldn't convert. Kacey Yourous (Radcliffe, Ky.) led off the inning with a single to left and then Monica McGee (Starke, Fla.) reached on a fielder's choice when Southern Utah pitcher Mandy Brown was late making a throw to second. Senior third baseman Sonja Cadarette (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) popped out to Brwon on her sacrifice bunt attempt and then Diaz grounded into a double play to the third baseman Anna Leeman, who stepped on the bag and fired to first to end the game.
The Dolphins left eight runners on base, including three in the two-run fourth inning on a controversial call down the left field line. Trailing 2-1 in the top of the fourth, JU took a 3-2 lead on RBI singles by Lauren Redfern (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) and Ashley Houston (Glen St. Mary, Fla.). A double by Korcak and a walk by Yourous loaded the bases, but McGee fouled out to left on a ball which appeared to be trapped.
Southern Utah tied the game at 3-3 with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth and then manufactured the eventual game-winning run thanks to three walks by JU starter Katie Dobson (Clearwater, Fla.) and a RBI single by Leeman. Dobson (4-10) allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits with four walks in the loss, while Brown earned the win scattering eight hits in the complete-game effort.
