May 17, 2004
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University senior shorstop Dianna Korcak (Clearwater, Fla.) has been voted First-Team District III Academic All-America for the University Division, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Korcak, who is now eligible for the national Academic All-America Team to be announced June 3, is the second Dolphin this year (Inge Heiremans, women's soccer) to earn such honors. District III is made up of all Division I & I-AA schools in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. To be eligible, a player must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better and be a starter or key reserve on the field.
Korcak earned First-Team Atlantic Sun All-Conference honors after batting .361 with 36 RBI and an NCAA single-season record 17 triples this season. She was among the Atlantic Sun leaders in 11 different categories, ranking second in the league in hits (79), fourth in total bases (123), eighth in on-base percentage (.408) and ninth in slugging percentage (.562). She also ranked third in the A-Sun with 43 runs scored, second in plate appearances (244) and third in at-bats (219).
Korcak became the NCAA single-season recordholder for triples after belting a pair against Savannah State in a doubleheader on April 30. She eclipsed the previous mark of 16 set by Barb Marean of Massachusetts in 1992 and later by Jennifer Egan of Monmouth in 1995. Korcak had a school-record 20-game hitting streak during the season and posted 20 multi-hit games. She played every inning of the Dolphins' 120 games the past two seasons.
The Clearwater, Fla., native graduated from JU with a 3.67 GPA in elementary education. At JU's annual All-Sports Award Banquet on April 20, Korcak received the Douglas B. Milne Sportsmanship Award for being the Dolphins' top female student-athlete, who has demonstrated excellence in athletics, academics, leadership and sportsmanship.
The Dolphins finished their second season of softball 22-42.
