Softball picked eighth in Atlantic Sun preseason coaches poll

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - With their first game less than two weeks away, the Jacksonville University softball team was selected to finish eighth in the Atlantic Sun Conference preseason coaches poll, as released on Tuesday.

Stetson, the defending A-Sun regular season champion, was slated to repeat as champions with 95 votes, while Kennesaw is picked second with 93. Campbell (69) and Mercer (68) is third and fourth, respectively, while North Florida rounded out the top five with 62 votes.

East Tennessee State (52), Gardner-Webb (37), JU (35), Lipscomb (24) and Belmont (15) make up the rest of the poll.

The Dolphins return eight players from the 2006 squad which fell two games shy of making the A-Sun tournament. Leading the crop of returners is Beth Glasscock, who received all-freshman honors last season after leading the squad with 27 RBI and ranking second with 10 doubles.

Joining Glasscock will be juniors Shannon Jensen and Jillian Mirante. Jensen tallied a team-best 108 strikeouts in 2006, while Mirante posted a career-best 44 hits during her sophomore campaign.

JU opens the 2007 season on Friday, Feb. 9 at home against Minnesota and Southern Illinois. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
