Softball opens 2007 season with home tournament starting Friday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - It may be a little cold outside, but that is not holding the JU softball team back as they open the 2007 season with a home tournament at the JU Softball Complex on Friday.

On Friday, JU will play Minnesota at 5 p.m., before finishing the night with Southern Illinois at 7 p.m. The Dolphins will take on the Golden Gophers again on Saturday at Noon and wrap up the day with the Salukis at 2 p.m. They will finish the tournament on Sunday at noon against UNG-Greensboro.

Fans can take in each game at the tournament for $5 or by a $10 weekend pass, which will also you to see all 10 games.

"We are ready to play," said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. "I am excited at the level of competition we are facing this weekend. Physically, we are better defensively and offensively than we were a year ago. We have to see if we are ready mentally for the season and we get to find out starting Friday."

The Dolphins return eight players from the 2006 squad which fell two games shy of making the A-Sun Tournament. Leading the crop of returners is Shannon Jensen and Jillian Mirante. Jensen tallied a team-best 108 strikeouts in 2006, while Mirante posted a career-best 44 hits during her sophomore campaign.
