JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU softball team will look to build some momentum for next season as they host Stetson for its season finale doubleheader on Thursday at the JU Softball Complex.
The Dolphins (15-41, 4-12 A-Sun) will look to end the 2007 season strong after dropping seven of their last eight Atlantic Sun Conference games, while the Hatters (36-17, 10-4 A-Sun) enters Thursday night's contest following a doubleheader sweep of Belmont on April 21.
"Even though this was a hard year, we want to go out with a bang for the seniors and build momentum for the future," said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. "I want to personally thank the seniors for their hard work and dedication over this past year."
Despite losing the veteran leadership of three seniors, JU is tentatively set to return 12 players next season, including Jillian Mirante and Beth Glasscock. Mirante started the season with a .071 batting average, but raised the mark to a team-best .320 and added a .407 clip in A-Sun play. Glasscock, a 2006 A-Sun all-freshman selection, rejoins the Dolphins after sitting out this season due to a hand injury.
The Dolphins' freshman core of Brittany Abbott, Simone Bruemmer, Ashley Iveson, Kelly McKeon, Ashley Mora and Amber Moseley will also contribute greatly next season after facing a schedule that had six defending conference champions and nine 2006 NCAA Tournament participants.
"We had to take our lumps this season," said Lehotak. "Our young players got significant playing time in a several different spots against a tough schedule. I believe our team, even the seniors, is better as a whole after facing the competition we faced and I can't wait to build on it for 2008."
The first game of the A-Sun doubleheader between the Dolphins and Hatters is set for 4 p.m., while the Senior Night ceremony will take place 20-mintues before the first pitch.
