Women's Tennis Competes in ITA All-American Prequalifying Tourney

Oct. 5, 2004

LOS ANGELES - The Jacksonville University women's tennis team competed in the 2004 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships but did not place an individual or a doubles team in the semifinals of the prequalifying tournament, held at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the UCLA campus.

In doubles, the Dolphin team of sophomore Emese Sulyos (Szolnok, Hungary) and senior Nisrine Hajbane (Casablanca, Morocco) received a first-round bye, but the team lost in Sunday's quarterfinals to Princeton's Alison Hashmall and Jessica Siebel, 8-3, to be ousted from the tournament.

In singles action, Sulyos defeated UC Riverside's Casey Cross in the opening round (6-2, 6-2), but last year's Atlantic Sun Player of the Year was ousted by Nebraska's Enalina Skaza in a 6-4, 6-1 decision Sunday. For Sulyos, ranked 107th in the ITA's preseason poll, it marked her first loss as a collegiate, ending a 25-match winning streak.

Freshman Lena Willi (Freiburg, Germany) fell in the first round of the singles draw, 6-1, 6-1, to Nika Koukhartchouk of Mississippi. Hajbane also lost in the opening round, dropping a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 decision to Penn State's Maria Husain.

The Dolphins travel next to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the ITA South Regional on the campus of the University of Alabama.
