March 23, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Wins in five singles matches propelled the JU women's tennis team to a 6-1 win over Wright State Wednesday afternoon at the Alexander Brest Tennis Courts. The Dolphins, who won without the 2004 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, sophomore Emese Sulyos (Szolnok, Hungary) improve to 7-9 on the year, while the Raiders fall to 5-10.
JU swept the two doubles matches with the Dolphins' top duo of senior Nisrine Hajbane (Casablanca, Morocco) and freshman Lena Willi (Freiburg, Germany) taking a 8-2 win over Laura Culberson and Audra Beckett. JU's freshmen tandem of Dana Antonioli (Bienne, Switzerland) and Daphne Bourot (Lyon, France) won a 8-5 decision over the Raiders' Tiffani Foster and Christa Ames on Court No. 2.
With Sulyos out, JU had to shift all its players up a spot in the line-up, and two made quick work of their opposition. Willi won a 6-1, 6-0 match over Wright State's Jessica Lee at the top spot, while Bourot won 12 straight games in downing Megan Laux, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 3 singles. Hajbane got a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Foster at the second position, while Antonioli defeated Beckett, 6-2, 7-5, on Court No. 4. Junior Megan Williams (New Westminster, B.C.) beat Ames, 6-2, 6-3, at the fifth spot to close out the match.
The Dolphins head to Daytona to face Bethune-Cookman Wednesday, March 30 at 1 p.m.
