Dolphins have successful run at the ITA Regionals

Oct. 23, 2006

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Freshman Tatiana Soldatova's appearance in the quarterfinals women's B singles draw at the ITA Regionals was one of the highlights from a successful weekend for the JU women's tennis team.

Joining Soldatova in a successful weekend was Emese Sulyos, who lost in the semifinals of the women's A singles consolation bracket.

"This was a really good weekend for us against some very good competition," said JU head coach Jarod Camerota. "Emese played one of the best players in the first round and went three sets with her. Tatiana put together a really solid run against some tough players as well."

Soldatova's run started with an impressive 6-4, 6-3 win over Alabama's Alice Tunaru. In the second round, Soldatova won a three-set thriller, outlasting Troy's Stephanie Vieira, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Her third round matchup was not nearly as dramatic, dispatching South Florida's Ann-Marie Madric, 6-3, 6-0.

The freshman's tournament run was snapped in the quarterfinals when she fell to Mississippi State's Elna de Villiers, 7-6 (5), 6-0.

Sulyos faced 16th seeded Yvette Hyndman of Georgia in the first round, winning the first set 7-5 before dropping the final two sets 6-1, 6-4. The loss snapped Sulyos' winning streak at 15, which dates back to last season.

That sent Sulyos into the consolation bracket where she went on a tear. She handled UAB's Nischa Maier-Knapp in the first round, 6-4, 6-1, and followed that up with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Valentina Galbarina of Stetson in the second round.

In the quarterfinals, Sulyos rallied to oust Auburn's Alex Haley, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1). Her run ended in the semifinals against Florida's Csilla Borsanyi, 6-2, 6-1.

The Dolphins are back in action again on Oct. 27 at the Seminole Fall Classic.
