Women's tennis claims A-Sun regular season title
April 2, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After sweeping Belmont and Lipscomb this weekend, the Jacksonville women's tennis team clinched the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title and the No. 1 seed at the upcoming conference tournament.
After dropping their A-Sun opener, the Dolphins (16-3, 8-1 A-Sun) ran through the rest of the A-Sun schedule unscathed to earn their first regular season title. The run in the A-Sun has buoyed a 13-match winning streak that JU will carry into the tournament.
"I am very proud of the team and what they have accomplished this season," said JU head coach Jarod Camerota. "Now, we're going to have a target on our backs at the conference tournament. We're have to keep improving and working hard in the next two weeks for us to reach our goal of the NCAA Tournament."
The Dolphins success has been anchored by strong results in double plays and in the top of the lineup. JU has won the doubles point in all eight of their conference wins, with the duo Lena Willi and Emese Sulyos going 11-2 as the No. 1 doubles team and Iva Jaresova and Tatiana Soldatova going 11-1 as the No. 2 doubles team.
In singles action, Sulyos, Willi and Soldatova have been rock solid. Sulyos at No. 1 and Willi at No. 2 are each 16-2 on the season as Willi has won 12 straight matches and Sulyos has 11. Soldatova sports a 14-4 record from the No. 3 position, having won five straight as well.
The Dolphins wrap up the regular season at Bethune-Cookman on April 10.
