JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU junior outside hitter Candice Rose (Mechanicsville, Md.) had a team-high 14 kills and added 10 digs as the Dolphins dropped a 3-1 (26-30, 27-30, 30-24, 20-30) decision to Maryland-Baltimore County in the final match of the Hampton Inn/JU Invitational Saturday night at Swisher Gymnasium. Senior outside hitter Radka Dimitrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) and sophomore middle hitter Lindsay Ward (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) each earned all-tournament honors for the Dolphins.
Dimitrova had 11 kills, a tournament-high 54 for the three matches, nine digs and five blocks against UMBC, while Ward added nine kills, eight digs and five blocks for the Dolphins (1-2). Freshman setter Erin Hickman (San Antonio, Texas) had 45 assists and 11 digs.
Jocelyn Teoh, who made the all-tournament team, had 22 kills and 19 digs to lead the Retrievers, while Amy Starosta added 19 kills and Megan Gross had 63 assists.
In the first match of the night session, Xavier wrapped up the tournament title by starting the season 3-0 with a sweep of Birmingham Southern (30-17, 30-21, 30-19). The tournament Most Valuable Player, Marisa Main, had 15 kills and 18 assists to lead the Musketeers.
The Dolphins return to action when they host Florida A&M on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium.
