Radka Dimitrova and Eva Stoilova Earn A-Sun Volleyball All-Conference Honors
Nov. 19, 2003
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU senior outside hitter Radka Dimitrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) has been named to the Atlantic Sun All-Conference First-Team, while freshman outside hitter Eva Stoilova (Sofia, Bulgaria) was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday. This is the second-straight First-Team All-Conference award for Dimitrova.
Dimitrova, who led the Dolphins and ranked fourth in the A-Sun in kills per game (3.76), propelled JU to a 15-13 regular-season record (8-2 in the A-Sun) and the No. 3 seed in the Atlantic Sun Championship, which begins Friday when JU takes on Troy State at 1:00 p.m. in Orlando. Stoilova recorded double-digit kills in 11-of-18 matches, while tallying double-digit digs in 10-of-18 matches. She was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team despite sitting out 9-of-the-first-10 matches this season.
Dimitrova finished the 2003 season ranked seventh in the A-Sun in hitting percentage (.278) and eighth in the conference in blocks per game (0.85), while earning All-Tournament honors at the Hampton Inn/JU Classic, recording a career-high 29 kills in a win over Birmingham Southern on Aug. 29. She also finished the season ranked second on the team in blocks (69) and aces (26). She ranks second all-time at JU in career kills (1,206), recording 906 digs, 214 blocks, 59 double-digit kill matches and 39 double-doubles in her career. As a junior, Dimitrova earned Atlantic Sun First-Team All-Conference honors after finishing third in the league with 4.21 kills per game. She also earned A-Sun All-Tournament Team accolades after leading the Dolphins to a berth in the semifinals of the A-Sun Championship. Off the court, Dimitrova has been a three-time Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference honoree and was selected for the Dean's List three times.
Stoilova led all Dolphins with 45 aces this season, while finishing second on the team with 3.22 kills per game and ranking third on the team with 187 digs. Due to minimum game requirements, Stoilova did not qualify in several A-Sun statistical categories, but her numbers would have placed her first in the conference in aces per game (0.71) and eighth in the A-Sun in digs per game (2.85).
The winner of the JU/Troy State match advances to the semifinals to face the No. 2 seed Georgia State Panthers at 7:00 p.m. The A-Sun Championship Final will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 1:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Sunshine Network.
