Dolphins split final two matches at Denver Invitational
Sept. 10, 2005
DENVER, Colo. - The Jacksonville volleyball team went the distance on Saturday, not once, but twice.
The Dolphins (2-9) rallied from an 0-2 deficit before falling 3-2 to TCU early on Saturday and bounced back in the evening after letting a 2-0 lead on Idaho State slip away before recoving for a 3-2 win to snap a five-match losing streak.
In the opening match against TCU, JU's offense struggled to get started. The Horned Frogs (5-2) held the Dolphins to a negative hitting percentage in game one, claiming a 30-21 win. In game two, JU had a hitting percentage of just .097 as TCU held off the Dolphins for a 30-26 win and a 2-0 lead.
But the Dolphins didn't give up. JU found its offense in game three, getting 15 kills on its way to an impressive 30-23 win.
Game four was a battle, with both teams having a chance to win the game before the Dolphins forced a fifth game with a 34-32 win.
Game five was a see-saw battle that went back and forth with JU tying the game at 10 on a kill by Eva Stoilova, her 15th of the match. TCU answered with the last five points to claim game five and the match, 15-10.
In the nightcap against Idaho State, the Dolphins took charge early. JU had a .375 hitting percentage in game one, racking up 19 kills to take the game, 30-26. Game two saw the defense step up as JU claimed a 2-0 lead with a 30-27 win.
But Idaho State came roaring back to win the next two games. ISU claimed game three 30-27 and won game four going away, 30-15.
The second fifth game of the day for the Dolphins was another see-saw affair. With the game tied at 10, the Dolphins got three kills from Goettsch and one from Lindsey Ward to hold on for a 15-13 win and Jacksonville's second win of the year.
Against Idaho State, the Dolphins racked up 99 digs, with six players reaching double figures. While dishing out 53 assists, Erin Donivan had a team-high 19 digs. Borisova had 18 digs to go with her 11 kills while libero Alyssa Fowles added another 18. Stoilova had 13 kills and 16 digs with Ward getting another double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs. Joanna Silva had 10 digs as well.
The Dolphins return to the court next Friday at the FIU Invitational in Miami, Fla.
