MIAMI, Fla.- - The Jacksonville volleyball team capped its most successful weekend of the season by topping in- state rival Stetson, 3-1, to take second place in the Florida Invitational Invitational.
Four players recorded double figures in kills, led by Lindsay Ward and Joanna Silva's 17 kills. Silva added 14 digs and two blocks while Ward added a team-high four blocks. For her efforts, Silva was named to the all-tournament team.
"Lindsey was unreal in this match," said JU head coach Kevin Paul. "We live and die by our ball control. We dig and pass well, we play well. When we don't, we don't play well. It was good for us to get some wins under our belt as we get ready for conference play."
Ward's 17 kills are accentuated by her .667 hitting percentage, leading the Dolphins offensive attack to a .326 hitting percentage for the match.
The Dolphins (4-10) opened the match with an impressive 30-21 win in game one, with the offense recording 15 kills.
Game two saw the Hatters (4-8) pull out a 30-27 win. Stetson's offense hit .346 for the game to rack up 22 kills with just four attack errors.
The last two games saw the Dolphins show their potential. JU dominated the final two games, taking the third game 30-22 and the fourth 30-15. JU had 41 kills in the final two games while hitting a season-high .514 in the fourth game.
Four Dolphins finished the match in double figures in kills, led by Ward and Silva. Petya Borisova racked up 14 kills to go along with 12 digs while Eva Stoilova had 12 kills and 13 digs to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.
Stetson was led by DeeAnn Dempsey's 21 kills with Liz Gorski picking up 30 digs. Karl Readshaw dished out 45 assists in the loss.
The Dolphins return to action next Saturday in a rematch at Stetson in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams. First serve is set for Noon.
