Volleyball survives to beat Lipscomb, 3-1
Nov. 5, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Despite injuries limiting the JU volleyball team to just seven players, the Dolphins were able to overcome that and an early 1-0 deficit to top Lipscomb, 3-1, on Saturday night at Swisher Gymnasium.
Eva Stoilova and Erin Donivan each picked up double-doubles for the Dolphins. Stoilova led the Dolphins in kills (19) and digs (23), for her second straight double-double. Erin Donivan dished out 45 assists and had 12 digs for JU.
Six Dolphins reached double figures in digs, led by Stoilova's and Donivan's totals. Alyssa Fowles had 16 and was joined by Katie Hendrian's 12 as well as Lindsay Ward and Danielle Neville getting 11 apiece.
The win also pulled the Dolphins to .500 for the first time this season (13-13) after starting the season 1-9.
"To me, that's the best match we've played all year long," said JU head coach Kevin Paul. "With all the injuries and all the circumstances they faced, to come out and win this match is really a tribute to this team."
Lipscomb (12-18, 5-4 A-Sun) opened the match with a 30-27 win in game one. The Bisons had 19 kills and held the Dolphins to a .113 hitting percentage.
Game two saw the Dolphins rally from a 17-10 deficit to even the match via a 30-26 win. JU's offense came alive, racking up 16 kills and hitting .255 for the game while limiting Lipscomb to a .132 hitting percentage.
Game three was another see-saw affair that saw JU take a 2-1 lead, 30-28. The Dolphins had 17 kills, but forced 10 Lipscomb hitting errors, as the Bisons hit just .019.
JU controlled game four until late, when Lipscomb had a last ditch rally to even the match at 29. The Bisons fought off five match points before JU sealed the win, 33-31.
Lipscomb's Cara Wilber racked up a match-high 26 kills while Ann Mullins had a match-high 30 digs.
The Dolphins are back in action on Tuesday at Bethune-Cookman. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
