Volleyball drops final two matches of the Louisville Invitational
Aug. 26, 2006
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - While improving their play, the JU volleyball team was unable to translate that into wins as the Dolphins dropped their final two matches to finish third at the Louisville Invitational.
In the opener against #12 Louisville, the Dolphins fell 3-0. With game one tied at 16, the Cardinals ended the game with a 14-2 run to jump on top. The Cardinals used that momentum to roll in games two and three, winning 30-21 and 30-16.
In the final match, the Dolphins lost 3-0 to defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Jacksonville State. The Dolphins were nipped in game one, 30-26, before dropping the final two games by the score of 30-21.
"We made some improvements today, but we've got a long way to go," said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. "We're still learning how to play with each other and looked a lot better today. These are two tough opponents and this experience will get us ready for the rest of the season."
In the first match against Louisville, Sara Bendorf led the Dolphins with 11 kills, while Michele Walroth led JU with 12 digs. Amanda Youell picked up a double-double, getting 15 assists and 10 digs in the loss.
Louisville held the Dolphins to just .025 hitting while racking up .270 hitting percentage. The Cardinals had 11 blocks in the match while JU had just three.
Against Jacksonville State, the Dolphins offense really never got going as they hit .121 for the match. Katie Hendrian led JU in kills with only eight while Petya Borisova, Walroth and Bendorf led the team with eight digs. Youell led the Dolphins with 17 assists.
Jacksonville State hit .236 for the match, getting 18 kills from Brittney Whitten and 17 from Abbey Breit.
The Dolphins are back in action again this weekend as they host the Crispers Invitational starting Friday.
