Sept. 2, 2006
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville volleyball team knocked off Georgia Southern and Lafayette on Saturday to finish off an undefeated run through the field at the Crispers Invitational to claim the tournament crown.
The Dolphins opened the day with a 3-1 win over Georgia Southern and ended the tournament with a 3-0 win over Lafayette.
Melissa Merchant was named tournament MVP after leading the Dolphins to the title, getting 10 kills and eight blocks against Georgia Southern and following it up with 12 kills and five blocks against Lafayette.
"I'm proud of how we came out, kept our focus and did the things we needed to win," said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. "This was good weekend for us and gave us a good dose of confidence heading into our final two tournaments. We just have to come out this week and continue to get better."
The Dolphins opened the day with a 30-28 win over Georgia Southern in game one, led by a strong defensive attack that forced 12 errors by the Eagles.
In the second game, JU didn't play as well, falling 30-15 behind an offensive assault by GSU. The Eagles racked up 19 kills while JU hit just .081 to even the match.
The Dolphins then took control in game three, winning 30-17. Once again the JU defense was the story as they limited GSU to just 11 kills and 12 errors for a -.026 percentage.
Game four was a back-and-forth affair before the Dolphins sealed the match with a 30-27 win.
For the match, JU racked up 17.5 blocks, led by Stevenique Richardson's nine and Merchant's eight.
In the finale, the Dolphins rolled over Lafayette. JU won games one and two by the score of 30-22, before taking game three, 30-25.
Merchant had 12 kills, with Sara Bendorf and Richardson getting 11 apiece. Bendorf recorded her second double-double of the weekend with 20 digs while Shelley Walroth had 12 digs.
The Dolphins are back in action again next weekend at the South Florida Invitational.
