Volleyball falls to USF in three

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Marcela Gurgel recorded 15 kills to lead the USF volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Jacksonville on Friday night in the first day of action at the Smoothie King Invitational.

The Dolphins (4-3) offense was led by eight kills from Eva Stoilova and Sara Bendorf. Shelley Walroth led the defense with 13 digs.

"We didn't play as well tonight as we did last week," said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. "South Florida did a lot of things well and took advantage of our mistakes. We just have to come out tomorrow focused on getting better."

The Dolphins dropped the first game 30-18, as the offense struggled to get on track. JU had just eight kills in the game and finished with a .040 hitting percentage while USF pounced, recording 14 kills and a .226 hitting percentage.

Game two went the same way as JU fell 30-18. Once again, JU had just eight kills and record a .032 hitting percentage. This time, USF had 16 kills while recording a .250 percentage.

In the third game, USF took the lead early and never relinquished it, sealing the match with a 30-24 win. The Dolphins had their best offensive game, getting 14 kills and a .231 hitting percentage.

The Dolphins were done by the serve receive, allowing USF to rack up 12 aces with seven players recording reception errors.

JU is back in action again on Saturday as the Dolphins face Texas Tech at 10 a.m. and Wright State at 4 p.m.
