JU set for first home games since early September

Sept. 28, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The roving band of gypsies known as the JU volleyball team returns home for the first time in four weeks as the Dolphins look to extend their current three-match winning streak.

JU opens the weekend on Friday night against future Atlantic Sun Conference foe Florida Gulf Coast at 7:30 p.m., with a Saturday's matchup against Bethune-Cookman set for 3:30 p.m.

"We are very excited to return home after a few weeks on the road," said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. "The teams we face this weekend will be a great challenge to see how far we've come in the past month. Florida Gulf Coast is a very talented squad that has talent at every position and Bethune is a very athletic team. Both teams represent different challenges that we will have to overcome this weekend."

The Dolphins (7-8) are looking to continue their recent hot streak. JU was mired in a six-match losing streak, facing some tough competition in the form of Texas Tech, Miami and Florida A&M.

Since ending the preseason tournament portion of the schedule, JU has rattled off three straight road wins with strong offense and timely defense. Sara Bendorf earned A-Sun "Player of the Week" honors after leading the offense with 50 kills during the three matches, while Shelley Walroth picked up 31 digs to lead the defense.

"We're continuing to improve each match, which is what we want to see," Kupferberg said. "We're coming off a very positive week and I'm ready to see how we perform again this weekend."

This weekend's matches will also feature UNF playing Bethune-Cookman at 5 p.m. on Friday and Florida Gulf Coast at 1 p.m. on Saturday, all in Swisher Gymnasium.
