Volleyball ready to "Rumble"

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville volleyball team dipped its toe in the pool of Atlantic Sun Conference play last week.

This weekend, the Dolphins jump into the deep end of A-Sun play with a match against crosstown rival North Florida on Saturday at 3 p.m. as part of the SunTrust River City Rumble.

The two teams split the season series a year ago, with JU winning 3-1 at home in the match that counted in the conference standings. This year's conference counting match is at UNF.

"We've had a good week of preparation and I feel like we're ready to go," said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. "Hopefully we can take the momentum from winning last weekend and build on it this weekend."

The Dolphins (9-10, 1-1 A-Sun) opened A-Sun play in dramatic fashion - racking up a school and A-Sun record 23 blocks, 12 of those by Melissa Merchant, in a nerve-racking 3-2 loss to East Tennessee State.

JU was able to bounce back this past Saturday with a 3-0 win over Kennesaw State, getting the offense rolling again.

"We're improving, but we're not as consistent as we need to be," Kupferberg said. "We're close and hopefully we can take the things that we worked on in practice this week into the match on Saturday."
